Two more people have been arrested in connection with the beating and burning of Abu Yunus Mohammad Shahidunnabi Jewel in Burimari in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat. The Detective Division (DB) and the Patgram Police carried out a joint operation Sunday night and arrested the two.
The two detainees are Rabiul Islam (48) from Ufarmara village of Burimari, junction of Patgram and Md. From the same village. Sujan Mia (21 years old). 31 people were arrested in three separate cases in that incident.
Lalmonirhat Police Superintendent Abida Sultana said that so far 31 people have been arrested and handed over to the court in three separate cases for beating and burning the Shahidunnabi jewel from Rangpur in Burimari for allegedly insulting the Holy Quran. Nine of them have been in preventive detention for three days in two phases. All three have pleaded guilty in court. He also said that no one will be able to cross if they commit a crime. Police continue to analyze video footage of the incident and provide technical assistance.
On the night of October 29, Abu Yunus Mohammad Shahidunnabi was beaten and burned to death in Burimari. Shahidunnabi is the son of Abdul Wazed Miah from the Shalban Rokeya Sarani area of Rangpur city. He is a former Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College librarian.
