Three fishermen have been reported to have entered the Sundarbans illegally to catch crabs and have been caught by tigers. Ratan (35), Mizanur (39) and Abu Musa (40) from the Kaikhali Union of Shyamnagar Upazila are known to enter Sundarbans last Wednesday to catch crabs. Abu Musa Ratan told his relatives on his mobile phone around 6 p.m. Thursday that a tiger had jumped on Ratan and Mizanur while they were catching crabs in a canal in the Talpatti area in the afternoon. At that moment he ran and climbed a tree in the forest and defended himself. However, after waiting an hour on a tree branch, Abu Musa was unable to find Mizanur and Ratan. In the evening, Abu Musa informed Ratan and Mizanur’s family about the matter on his mobile phone.

Local media worker Nurnabi Islam Emon said that Ratan and Mizanur went to the forest last Wednesday. They did not return. Even with the wet wipes they have, they can no longer communicate on their mobile phones. Upon hearing the news of the tiger’s capture, family members took a boat and trawler to search the forest for the night.

Kaikhali UP President Sheikh Abdur Rahim said: “I have learned that two foresters named Ratan and Mizan have been attacked by tigers in Sundarbans. A forest dweller named Musa informed his family about the incident. He added that they did not accept the pass permit to go to the forest. The matter has been reported to the forest department. Ratan is the son of a Bengali from the West Kaikhali village and Mizanur is the son of Manu Mistry from the same village. They are both married.
