Two city corporations took over Dhaka’s canals and drains.

Dhaka North and South City Corporation has been given the responsibility of draining rainwater to alleviate waterlogging in the metropolis of Dhaka.

Previously, this responsibility was Dhaka WASA.

WASA signed a memorandum of understanding with two Dhaka city corporations in this regard at a function at the Intercontinental Hotel in the capital on Thursday.

Through this, as of today, all channels and channels run by WASA passed into the hands of the two city corporations.

By signing this memorandum of understanding, WASA’s Dr. Thaksin A. Khan hopes that the drainage of rain and floods in Dhaka City will accelerate from now on.

Atiqul Islam, Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation, said the canal will be owned by the city corporation from today. By cleaning these channels, the speed of the water in the channels will be restored as before. In addition, illegal structures on both sides of the canal will be evicted. Green areas, walkways and bike lanes will be created by re-digging canals and increasing water holding capacity.

The Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, declared the transfer of responsibility for the management of the drainage as a historic day by signing a memorandum of understanding.

“Starting next Saturday, we will start cleaning three canals and two sewers (Panthapath and Segundobagicha), including Jirani from Dhaka, DSCC Manda with its own funds,” he said. This work will be completed in the next three months. The Kalunagar Canal has been partially cleared. Afterwards, work will be done on the Dholai canal and the Buriganga Adi canal.

In addition, a project worth around Tk 900 million rupees for channel development will be sent to ECNEC for approval, said the mayor of DSCC.

Speaking as the keynote guest on the occasion, Local Government Minister Tajul Islam said: “We want to transform the city of Dhaka into a beautiful, livable and healthy city. If we want to fix the city of Dhaka, we have to fulfill our responsibilities properly. The management of drainage in Dhaka was carried out by the Department of Public Health Engineering in 1973. After that, the municipality used to perform this duty. It was handed over to Dhaka WASA in 1986. Subject to the approval of the Prime Minister, today the management of the Dhaka City drainage will go to the Dhaka WASA manpower and resources to the two city corporations. ‘

Helaluddin Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Department of Local Government, chaired the function. He said the signing of the agreement today was the result of dedicated long-term efforts. A memorandum of understanding has been signed subject to the efforts of the minister, the interest of the two mayors, and the approval of the prime minister. I hope there is no waterlogging next monsoon.

Incidentally, Dhaka WASA maintains and operates 26 canals (about 60 km) and about 365 km of large drains and four pumping stations in the city as part of its waterlogging solution. The two city corporations deal with some 2,211 km of canals.
