The city corporation is taking responsibility for draining rainwater to alleviate water shortages in the capital. This responsibility is being transferred from Dhaka WASA to Dhaka North and South City Corporation.
To do this, a meeting will be held on Sunday (October 11) at the Secretariat to transfer responsibility for water drainage from the local government department to the two cities.
Saturday (October 10) Public Relations Officer of the Department of Local Government. Haider Ali confirmed the matter to Jago News.
He said the meeting will be chaired by the local government minister. Tajul Islam. The meeting will also be attended by the Mayor of Dhaka North and South, the Chief Secretary, the Department of Local Government, the Managing Director (MD) of Dhaka WASA and other officials.
The public relations official said: “The meeting will decide to transfer responsibility for rainwater drainage from Dhaka WASA to North and South City Corporation.”
A little rain caused flooding in the capital. Although Dhaka WASA is responsible for the drainage, urban experts and ordinary citizens think that they have failed. Mayors have also reacted publicly to the failure of WASA on several occasions. They also demanded that the city corporation be responsible for drainage under the law.
Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Mayor of Dhaka South, said in an online meeting on July 22 about the waterlogging in the capital that WASA and the Water Development Board have been entrusted with the responsibility of removing the waterlogging in the city. But, sadly, they have completely failed in that responsibility. Responsibility is our day, we will solve the Dhaka city water blockage through a long-term master plan.
Referring to various rules, sections and subsections of the Second Program and Third Program of the Local Government (City Corporation) Act of 2009, the mayor said that the city corporation is responsible for the drainage, conservation and maintenance of water in the areas covered by the city corporation. But for a long time, Dhaka WASA and the Water Development Board-Paubo have put in charge the responsibility of conserving, maintaining and draining water.
Tapas added: “By law, they don’t hand us the responsibility. But it is not fulfilling that responsibility adequately. The water shortage in Dhaka has become a big problem year after year as WASA and the Water Development Board are kindly doing their duty. Please transfer responsibility to us in accordance with the law, we are ready to take responsibility. I will free the city of Dhaka and the people of Dhaka from the curse of waterlogging through a long-term plan with responsibility.
