Two buses collide in Sylhet, 6 bodies recovered

There was a collision between ENA Paribahan and London Express in Rashidpur on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway. Police and firefighters are recovering the bodies of six people immediately.

More than 50 passengers on the two buses were injured in the incident. At least 16 of them are in critical condition. They were sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. Another died after being taken there.

Police initially said 11 people had died in the incident, but later confirmed that seven bodies had been recovered. The death toll is expected to rise.

The tragic accident took place at Dakshin Surma Rashidpur Police Station around 8 am on Friday (February 28).

Said the police officer in charge of South Surma (OC). Monirul Islam has confirmed this information.

The deceased was identified as Al Mahmud Saad Imran Khan, 33, a professor in the department of forensic medicine at the Women’s Medical College Hospital in Sylhet. Jahangir Hossain (24), Nurul Amin (50) from Rajaniakandi West Para from Sarail Police Station in Brahmanbaria, Sagar Ahmed (29) from Wari area in Dhaka and Shah Kamal (28) from Akhalia area in Sylhet city.

OC Monirul Islam said that the London Express (Dhaka Metro B 15-317) leaving Dhaka and the ENA Paribahan bound for Dhaka (Dhaka Metro B 14-6311) leaving Sylhet collided head-on. The front of both buses has twisted. Many passengers were injured.

Jasim Ahmed, a London Express passenger, said the bus driver repeatedly passed him on the way from Dhaka. He was also warned several times. But he did not listen. Jasim said he was driving the bus really fast.

Another passenger, Sumon, said there were between 29 and 30 passengers on the London transport bus. All were injured. Some of them have also died.

DD in charge of the Sylhet fire service. Kubad Ali Sarkar said: “We came from the place and rescued 10 people.” There are bodies of seven of them. Several other victims have already been sent to Osmani Medical College Hospital.
