Dhaka: Two agreements have been signed to legalize illegal Bangladeshi workers in the Maldives, repatriate them, send new workers and develop the foreign services of the two countries.
The agreement was signed with the Bangladesh Expatriate Welfare Ministry and the Foreign Service Academy during a visit to Dhaka by Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid at the Foreign Service Academy on Tuesday (February 9).
Before signing the agreement, Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid toured Bangabandhu Corner at the Foreign Service Academy.
Early in the morning, a meeting of the foreign ministers and delegations of the two countries was held at the Padma state guesthouse. There was a detailed discussion on the dispatch of Bangladeshi human resources to the Maldives and the signing of two memoranda of understanding on cooperation in training diplomats from Bangladesh and Maldives.
They also discussed issues related to bilateral cooperation, including fisheries development and deep-sea fishing, the Joint Commission for Technical and Economic Cooperation, the repeal of the double tax, the exchange of prisoners and the finalization of a memorandum of understanding.
Rear Admiral Nazmul Hasan, Bangladesh’s ambassador to the Maldives, said the two countries have been working together on various bilateral and international issues since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and the Maldives in 1986.
There are around one lakh of Bangladeshi expatriates in the small country of Maldives, accounting for 80 percent of the total expatriate workers working in the country. Bangladeshi expats work here in almost every field, including construction, tourism, marketing, communication, and the health sector. Recently, several Bangladeshi expatriates in the Maldives have become undocumented, many of whom took advantage of legalization measures taken by the Maldivian government in 2019.
