Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made clear in his Victory Day speech that Turkey will not bow to any threat in the Mediterranean. Anadolu Agency reports that it made the comments in reference to Greece.
Greece disagrees with Turkey over oil and gas exploration in the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, Greece has announced that it will increase its territorial waters in the Ionian Sea from 8 nautical miles to 12 nautical miles. And this has angered the Turkish president. On Sunday, Erdogan and other top government officials laid wreaths at the grave of Kamal Ataturk, the father of modern Turkey, on Victory Day.
In a message, Erdogan said that Turkey would not bow to any threat, especially over the Mediterranean. On the contrary, they will protect your rights in light of international law and bilateral agreements.
Meanwhile, Greek Prime Minister Kryakos Mitsotakis said the government planned to introduce a bill to double Greece’s territorial waters off Italy in the Ionian Sea. Egypt and Cyprus have recently discovered large fuel mines in the eastern Mediterranean. Since then, Greece has intensified its efforts to find natural resources in the area. And the Turkish government has issued a stern warning.
