US President Donald Trump extended the ban on immigrant worker visas, ignoring objections from employers. On Thursday he extended the one-month immigration ban. It says the move is necessary to protect American workers in the epidemic-hit economy.
Trump banned several green card applicants and temporary foreign workers in April and June. The ban was to expire on December 31. But on Thursday, the outgoing president again extended his term.
Under the new decision, the ban on migrant workers will remain in effect until March 31, 2021. Trump claims he imposed the ban to protect domestic workers as the coronavirus epidemic has severely damaged the economy.
Meanwhile, the newly elected president of the United States, Joe Biden, has strongly criticized the decision of the Trump administration. However, he did not say whether he would lift the ban after taking office on January 20.
The US Department of Justice has appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals against the suspension. The hearing is scheduled for January 19.
