Trudeau has come under fire for commenting on India’s peasant protests

Anurag Srivastava, a spokesman for the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reacted angrily and said that he had knowingly made irrational comments.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau has become the first country in the world to protest ongoing farmer protests in the capital Delhi, demanding the repeal of a new farm bill in India.

Last Monday, Trudeau participated in an online event for the Sikh community in Canada to commemorate the 551st birthday of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. “The situation is worrying. We are all concerned for their families and friends,” he said of the ongoing peasant movement in India.

However, Trudeau said that Canada will always uphold its right to peaceful protest. He added that Canada believes in the importance of negotiations. That is why they raise their concerns directly with the Indian authorities in various ways.

According to the BBC, Erin O’Toole, leader of the country’s Conservative Party, made similar comments to Trudeau. He described the peaceful protests as “the foundation of democracy.”

Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava on Tuesday protested the comments made by the two Canadian leaders.

He said it was unreasonable to make such comments, especially on the internal affairs of a democratic country. Also, it is better not to use diplomatic talks for political purposes.

Farmers have been protesting in India since last Thursday. Farmers in several states, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, have joined the ‘Delhi Chal’ program to demand the repeal of three agricultural laws that have come into effect this year, Anandabazar reported.
