Salam, Jabbar, Shafiq, Barkat and Rafiq were shot dead when police opened fire on a procession of students on the same day that the movement to establish the mother tongue frightened Pakistani rulers.
Noted educator Sardar Fazlul Karim wrote in his essay ‘Bayannar O Aage’ about his self-sacrifice: ‘We love Barkat, Salam. But more than that, Barkat Salam loves us. They have saved our lives with their lives because they love us. They have touched our lives with nectar. We are soaked in that juice one by one, for each and every one of us.
