Today is the day of the great victory. An unforgettable day of a thousand years of courage and heroism of the Bengali nation. Day to debut as a nation of heroes. The day to name an independent territory called Bangladesh on the world map. On this day in the afternoon of 1971, after a nine-month war of armed liberation led by the nationalist Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the invading Pakistani forces surrendered to the joint forces at Maidan Racecourse (now Suhrawardy Udyan). The new state of Bangladesh emerged on the world map.

But we don’t win in one day. Behind this is a long and bloody nine-month battle. In the struggle in which millions of lives were lost, our independence was achieved on this day in 1971. Today, the nation will remember with deep respect and love the martyrs whose sacrifices have earned us our beloved freedom.

Remember the heroic fighters who gave a country to future generations by ending exploitation and deprivation. We will be honored to express our gratitude to all the men and women who are free today in exchange for their supreme sacrifice. The state has done everything possible to celebrate the day with due dignity.

Ignoring the verdict of the people in the 1970 elections, the Pakistanis resorted to conspiracies to seize power. The ruling party, under the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, began to postpone handing over power to the Awami League, which had won outright victory. As a result, then-East Pakistan was shaken. Bangabandhu’s historic speech at the then racecourse on March 7, 1971 ‘This time the struggle, the struggle for liberation. This time the struggle, the struggle for freedom, strengthens the people’s desire for freedom.

When Dhaka is on fire, the Pakistani ruling class chooses to suppress our desire for liberation. On the night of March 25, he was born indiscriminately killing unarmed people in the dead of night. After that, our individual trip became final. Not with them anymore. The final battle began on March 26. After a 9-month long liberation struggle, the Pakistani army accepted defeat.
