Three people were killed at the scene when an explosion occurred while welding a trailer inside a private container depot in Paienen, Chittagong. The three burn victims have been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The explosion took place around 12:15 pm on Wednesday. The container depot is located in the Laldia Char area of Panemos near Ghat No. 14 on the Karnafuli River.

The workers at the container depots of Arman Uddin, Moktar Hossain and Newaz Uddin were killed on the spot. Among them, Arman Uddin is the assistant to the trailer driver, the other two are working in the workshop of the container yard. Rabiul Hossain is in critical condition among the three injured. He is the chief mechanic of the workshop. Additionally, Amir Hossain and Jobayer Hossain are workshop assistants.

Yusuf Abdullah Harun, former president of FBCCI, owns the container yard. Former city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury started a protest movement in 2001 when the US-based port SSA was leased to install a terminal at the most important location at the entrance to the Chittagong port. Subsequently, the government withdrew from the construction of the terminal. During the One-Eleven government, backed by the army, a private container depot called Incontrade Limited was established on the leased land of Chittagong Port.

Apparently, it was not confirmed if there was oil before welding the tanker of the trailer dedicated to transporting the merchandise. The explosion occurred while welding oil in a tanker truck.

Mohsin Sarkar, Managing Director of Incontrade Limited, told Kaler Kanth: “The accident could have happened because we were not careful enough when welding. We have created our own research committee; Action will be taken against those responsible once the report is received. And in accordance with labor law, measures will be taken to compensate the injured and deceased.

He said: “Being away from the workshop, there was no damage to the containers for importing and exporting goods. However, several of our trailers have caught fire.

Witnesses said the trailer driver took the car out of the yard to bring lunch to the shop for repair. He survived the accident at the time.

Upon receiving news of the fire, four fire brigade vehicles managed to control the fire. Painet OC Jobayer Police Station Syed Kaler told Kantha that the explosion occurred while opening an oil tank from a long trailer in the container depot garage and carrying out welding work. Three people were killed on the spot. All the injured have been admitted to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

It should be noted that this container depot has been installed just half a kilometer from the main road on the way from Chittagong city to Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport. Rows and rows of covered trucks, trailers and vans fill the road in front of the depot, often causing traffic jams on the way to the airport. Although this container depot is one of the main reasons for traffic congestion at the airport, it has not been solved with much effort by the police and the administration. The locals also expressed their anger over this yesterday.
