China has demolished or completely damaged thousands of mosques in Xinjiang province. At the same time, around a million Muslims are forced to abandon their religious practices. A report from the Australian Institute for Strategic Policy (ASPI) on Friday affirmed that.

Analyzing satellite images, the ASPI report says that China has destroyed or completely damaged some 16,000 mosques in the past three years.

According to the report, the number of mosques in Xinjiang was more than 24,000. Of these, 7,500 mosques have been completely destroyed. Of the 15,000 remaining, more than half have suffered damage. It has been said that although these mosques have not been completely destroyed, the minarets and domes have been demolished.

The Chinese government promised Uighur Muslims to protect these religious sites.

The report added that more than a million Uighur Muslims and Turkish-speaking Muslims were detained in concentration camps. These Muslims are forced to abandon religious practices and traditions.

The report added that despite the demolition of Uighur religious sites, none of the Christian churches and Buddhist temples were damaged or destroyed.

The ASPI report further states that a third of Muslim shrines in Xinjiang have been cleared of shrines, tombs and pilgrimage sites. Bangkok Post, tutor, AP,
