In the first phase, the Awami League has finalized its candidates for the office of president in 300 of the 361 Union Parishad elections to be held on April 11. Of the 361, the rest of the divisions of the Union Parishads of Dhaka, Sylhet and Chittagong will be announced later.
The candidates were finalized at a joint meeting of the party’s parliamentary and local government people’s representatives nominating boards on Saturday.
The joint meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Ganobhaban. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, President of the Awami League and President of the Nominating Board of People’s Representatives of the Local Government and Parliamentary.
After the meeting, the name of the final candidate was announced in a press release signed by the secretary of the party’s central office, Barrister Biplob Barua.
Previously, the party had sold party nomination forms before the March 5 elections.
Electronic voting machines (EVM) will be used in 30 of the 361 union councils. The rest will be voted on the ballot. According to the announced calendar, the last date for the submission of nomination papers is March 18, the last date for the verification and selection of nomination papers is March 19 and the last date for the withdrawal of nominations is on March 24.
In addition, in the sixth phase, voting will take place in 11 municipalities on the same schedule. EVMs will vote everywhere.
It is worth mentioning that the list of candidates nominated by the Awami League for the position of president of the remaining union councils will be announced through a press release after the meeting adjourned on March 15.
