A 20-year-old girl was gang-raped in the dormitory of MC College, a traditional school in Sylhet. The incident took place in front of the sixth block of the dormitory last Friday night. All of the accused rapists are known to be BCL activists. The young woman went out for a walk around the university campus with her husband. Police raided the bedroom and surrounding areas in the early hours of the morning and recovered weapons, but were unable to arrest any of the rapists.
The incident has caused outrage in Sylhet. The demonstrations took place throughout the day on Saturday at different locations in Sylhet, including the main gate of MC College.
The university dormitory burned down on July 6, 2012 due to clashes between the Chhatra League and Chhatra Shibir. At the time, the incident led to widespread criticism at home and abroad. Then on Friday, the incident of the rape of a girl gave birth to another injury in the history of MC College.
The victim’s home is known to be in South Surma of Sylhet. She and her husband drove to MC College in the Tilagarh area of the city on Friday afternoon. Her husband was driving. After the night, they parked their car in front of the university’s main gate and shopped at a store. Later in the car they were talking. Around 7:30 p.m., some young people approached her car. When they tried to kidnap the girl, her husband arrested her. Then the criminals beat him. At one point, they were forced into the car and the husbands were taken to the MC College dorm in the adjoining bookshelf area. There, she went to the front of the 7th block of the dorm and pulled her husband out of the car and raped him. When the husband left about an hour later, he found his wife devastated in front of Block 7. At that time, he informed a Tilagarh leader about the incident on his mobile phone. Who was once the titular leader of the district Chhatra League. That leader is an influential leader from another Tilagarh belt. The rapists left after he arrived. At that time, the leaders of the gang of rapists tried to cover up the incident. In addition to trying for a long time, fear is also shown. But the rapist’s husband and the leader did not accept the matter. The police were later informed. A team from the Shahparán Metropolitan Police arrived at the scene around 10:30 pm. Police sent the rape victim to the One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) at Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet. A motorcycle left by the rapists was seized and a private car used by the couple was recovered.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the rapists were supporters of Ranjit Sarkar Group, a former secretary for sports and youth affairs for the district.
The defendant in the case: A gang rape case has been recorded in the MC College dorm area. The victim’s husband presented the case at the Shahparan Police Station on Saturday morning. The six defendants in the case are M Saifur Rahman (26), Tarekul Islam (26), Shah Mahbubur Rahman Rony (25), Arjun Laskar (25), Rabiul Islam (25) and Mahfuzur Rahman alias Masum (25). Apart from Rabiul and Tareq, others are alumni of MC College.
According to the case statement, Saifur Rahman’s home is in Balaganj, Sylhet and his current address is the MC College hostel caretaker’s bungalow. Shah Mahbubur Rahman’s house is located in Habiganj Sadar Upazila’s Bagunipara and his current address is room 205 in block 6 of the hostel. Mahfuzur Rahman’s house is in Gachabari village of Kanaighat, Rabiul’s house is in Dirai upazila village of Sunamganj, Arjun’s house is in Atgram of Zakiganj, and Tareq’s house is in residential area of Nisarg of the city of Sunamganj (Hasannagar).
According to university sources, Saifur, Rony and Mahfuzur are irregular students in the graduating class of the English department. Arjun is a former student. Rabiul is external. Although some of the six rapists were alumni and some were outsiders, the MC College dorm was their place.
Hostel campaign: Police raided the bedroom on Friday night after the incident. During the operation a tube pistol, four ramdas, two chapatis and a dagger from the bedroom were recovered. It is known that the defendant in the Saifur Rahman case used to stay in this room.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Jyotirmoy Sarkar told reporters: “Several police teams have been working since Friday night to identify rapists. A team from Shahparan Police Station searched the bedroom in the morning and recovered weapons, including a pipe pistol, from a room.
Police filed a case at Shahparan Police Station around 11am yesterday morning. The only defendant in the case is Chhatra League activist Saifur Rahman.
Shahporan Police Station OC Kaiyum Chowdhury said: “Saifur used to stay in the room where the weapons were recovered.”
Research Committee: The college authorities have formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident. Anwar Hossain, the lead professor in the university’s mathematics department, has been appointed chair of the committee. The other two members of the committee are Associate Professor Jiban Krishna Acharya from the Department of Political Science and Associate Professor Jamal Uddin from the same department. As a result, traffic on the Tilagarh-Shahparan highway was stopped. After an hour, the police pulled the students off the road.
Students say the university authorities keep the dormitory open even after the university is closed in the Corona situation. Despite being aware of these criminal activities, the university authorities did not close the dormitory.

Condemnation and justice require: Prominent Sylhet citizens have demanded that rapists be punished by condemning the gang rape incident of a young woman in the MC College dormitory.
