A court granted a seven-day pre-trial detention to police officer Rubel Sharma, who was last arrested on charges of involvement in the murder of Major Sinha. Cox’s Bazar Chief Judge Tamanna Farah granted pretrial detention at noon on Wednesday (September 30).

Previously, RAB, the investigating agency in the case, had requested his preventive detention for 10 days. After the hearing, the court judge granted a seven-day pretrial detention, confirmed the investigating officer in the case, the RAB assistant superintendent of police. Islam Khairul.

Rubel Sharma was presented in court from jail around 11:30 am on Wednesday. After he was granted pretrial detention, he was taken back to Cox’s Bazar Jail in a police prison van at around 1:30 p.m.

On 14 September, the RAB presented Agent Rubel as an accomplice of the CO expelled from the Teknaf police station, Pradeep Kumar Das, in the murder case of Sinha. He has been in jail ever since.

Investigating Officer Khairul Islam said that the name of police officer Rubel Sharma appeared while he was questioning the pre-trial detention of other defendants previously arrested in the notorious Major Sinha murder case. For this reason, on September 14, a RAB team brought Rubel to the RAB-15 office for questioning.

He said that after lengthy questioning, he was shown to be arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder case of Major Sinha. A request for pre-trial detention for further questioning was submitted and granted by the court. He will now be sent to preventive detention when time permits.

Commander (retired) Sinha Mohammad Rashed Khan was shot dead by police at the Shamlapur checkpoint in Teknaf on the night of July 31. Sinha’s older sister, Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, filed a case against nine people in Cox’s Bazar court on August 5 for the incident. The investigation of the case was entrusted to the RAB.

Seven policemen surrendered to court on August 8. In the past month, the RAB arrested 13 people, including three members of the APBN and three witnesses in the police case, and placed them in pre-trial detention. Agent Rubel Sharma was arrested as the fourteenth defendant.

So far, 12 defendants in the case have given confessional statements under section 164 in court. However, OC Pradeep did not release a confessional statement.
