The police continue to collect evidence, investigate and question a young man who was beaten to death in Patgram of Lalmonirhat. Lalmonirhat Additional Police Superintendent Rabiul Islam said the culprits would be brought under the law through an investigation. He said: ‘No case has yet been filed. However, the Parishad Union, the family of the deceased and the police will present several cases. Previously, evidence gathering, investigation and interrogation of locals was taking place to identify the real cause of the incident and the culprits. He said this at a briefing held at the Patgram police station on Friday (30).
On Thursday (October 29), before the Maghreb prayers, the door of the Burimari Union Parishad was smashed and the young man was taken out and beaten to death. Later, the agitated mob poured firewood and gasoline on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari national highway in front of Joy Traders in the first Burimari bamboo mill area and set it on fire.
The deceased was identified as Abu Yunus Mohammad Shahidunnabi, 50, the son of the late Abu Wazed Miah of Shalban Mistry Para in Rangpur city, police said. He is a former Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College librarian. Another person named Sultan Jobayer Abbas (45) who was with Shahidunnabi was injured in the incident. He is the son of Sheikh Abbas Ali from the same area, a document writer by profession.
Police officer Rabiul Islam said that when the agitated mob broke open a room at the Union Parishad and began beating Shahidunnabi, the police rushed to rescue him. Members of the police were also injured. However, Shahidunnabi could not save himself. However, the police rescued the other person who was with him.
When asked about the incident of the burning of the deceased, he said that the agitated crowd did not listen to the police, local administration and representatives of the people. They could not be controlled in any way. They didn’t calm down even after the police repeatedly told Handmy. At one stage they beat him to death and then took him to the road and set him on fire.
He said the case was being prosecuted and no arrests had been made. But everything is in process. He said they are trying to find out the real facts.
Meanwhile, together with the police, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has also launched a shadow investigation into the incident, RAB-13 Additional Hafizur Rahman Hafiz said.
A three-member investigative committee has been formed into the incident. Deputy Commissioner Abu Jafar confirmed that the committee was headed by an additional district magistrate on Friday morning.
He said: ‘An investigative committee has been formed to uncover the actual incident. Legal action will be taken against those responsible.
Hafizul Islam, a member of Burimari Union Parishad District No. 1, tried to protect Abu Yunus Mohammad Shahidunnabi and Jobayer Abbas on Thursday night. He told the Bengali Tribune about the incident: ‘After Asr’s prayers, two unidentified people arrived at the Burimari Central Jame Mosque. One of them, Jubed Ali, the caretaker of the mosque, entered the mosque and recorded it saying that he had weapons to carry the books of the Qur’an and the Hadith. At one point, 5-6 worshipers in front of the mosque entered the mosque and beat the man and another person on the veranda. Upon receiving the news, I went to the scene and tried to lock the two people inside a room at Burimari Union Parishad. But right now hundreds of people are gathering. I and a local named Rafiqul Islam Pradhan called Patgram OC Sumon Kumar Mohant Police Station, UNO Kamrun Nahar, Upazila President Ruhul Amin Babul, and Burimari Union Parishad President SM Newaz Nishat, and asked them to go to the place. However, the agitated crowd smashed through the doors and windows of the town hall without listening to anyone and took out one person and beat him to death. Subsequently, the body was burned with firewood and gasoline in the first area of the Burimari bamboo mill on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari National Highway.
There were between 5 and 6 thousand people excited at the time of the incident, no one had any control, he said.
