The Islamic University of Kushtia (IU) has created a volatile atmosphere as it pays tribute on Victory Day. There have been frequent clashes between officials and employees.

The incident took place on Wednesday (December 16) morning at the foot of the university’s ‘Mukta Bangla’.

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, the day was officially opened by Vice Chancellor Professor Sheikh Abdus Salam, raising flags and blowing up balloons in front of the administration building at 10:30 am on Wednesday. Later, the Vice Chancellor paid tribute on behalf of the administration of the university’s Liberation War Sculpture-Free Commemorative Bengal. Later, one by one, the Association of University Professors, the Association of Officers, the Chhatra Branch League and the centrally declared Bangabandhu Parishad paid tribute.

Later, the Officers Association and the Bangabandhu Parishad Officers Unit went to the altar to lay flowers. At that time, the BCL workers were still protesting because they had climbed onto the altar with their shoes on. Members of the officers’ association also protested. The members of the Officers Association were furious with them. At this moment there was a fierce clash between the two sides and in a moment it broke and shattered.

Later, when the Association of Technical Auxiliary Workers went up to the altar with flowers, the confrontation began in the second phase. At this time the flowers taken for the tribute were trampled. This was followed by persecutions and counter persecutions on both sides of the campus and at the altar. Later, the members of the Officers Association chased after the members of the Officers Association and through the main gate of the university. At the time of their professional duties, some journalists worked at the university. Selim and Azizur Rahman, temporary employees Sulaiman and a few others were harassed. When they went to protest, they attacked journalists. Later they also apologized verbally.

Law enforcement was also unable to handle the situation. The supervisory body has also been seen to play a silent role. Later, when the university rector, Professor Shahinur Rahman, called on everyone to calm down, the fighting continued. Later, when the atmosphere calmed down, various salons, departments and socio-cultural organizations paid tribute.

Even before this, on December 14, the day of the martyred intellectuals, there were clashes between teachers and officials of different groups over the delivery of flowers at the memorial.

In this regard, supervising professor Paresh Chandra Barman said: ‘We asked you to remain calm, but you did not listen to the proctorial body. That is all we ask for. We have nothing else to do. The university administration has also tried to defuse the situation.

Vice Chancellor Professor Abdus Salam said: “A group of people have created an undesirable atmosphere while paying tribute to Free Bengal before Victory Day. I believe that this behavior of those who create that environment is not welcome and amounts to insulting the martyrs.
