During the Corona period, educational institutions in different countries of the world, including Bangladesh, have been closed, giving priority to the safety of students. However, distance learning has been organized through the Internet. But due to digital divisions and inequalities, most students are deprived of the opportunity to use distance learning media. Only two-thirds of the world’s school-age students do not have access to the Internet, according to a new report from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The report was published in a press release on the UNICEF website on Tuesday.
‘How many children and young people have access to the Internet at home?’ According to the report, 1.3 billion schoolchildren between the ages of 3 and 16 worldwide do not have an Internet connection at home. The same is true for young people between 15 and 24 years old. Eighty-three percent (659 million) of the young population do not have an Internet connection.
The report is based on data from more than 75 countries.
A new UNICEF-ITU report says that children and youth from poor, rural and low-income families lag far behind their peers. They also have very little chance of reaching the same category as their peers.
In low-income countries, less than 1 in 20 school-age children has an Internet connection at home. In high-income countries, 9 out of 10 children have an Internet connection at home.
