Buyers are not buying Indian onions from the market, as the prices for Indian and domestic onions are almost the same. Importers are in trouble. Although 133 metric tons of onions were imported through the port of Healy in two days, no onions were imported through the port on Monday.

After the lifting of the ban on onion imports in India, imports started from January 2. As a result, the price of onion has started to fall in the wholesale and retail markets in the land port of Healy and Indian and local onions are selling at around Rs 30 per kg.

The start of onion imports has affected Healy’s retail and wholesale markets. Domestic onions are sold at Rs 40-45 / kg, but on Monday they are at Rs 30-35 / kg. Onions imported from India are sold at Rs 28-30 per kg.

Anisur Rahman, a Hili Bazar trader, said prices have dropped due to imports of Indian onions. We buy onions from importers at a price of Rs 26-30 per kg and sell them on the retail market. Buyers do not buy Indian onions as the prices for Indian and domestic onions are almost the same on the market.

Importer Mahfuzar Rahman Babu said the LC was opened for the importation of onions, which were not imported into India on Monday due to IP (import permitting) issues. The importation of onions will start again in 2-3 days.

He further said that the price of onion in India is increasing just as the price of domestic onion has decreased in the domestic market due to onion importation. In this way, traders may have to account for losses when importing onions.
