Recommendation to cancel Ziaur Rahman’s title

Liberation War Affairs Minister AQM Mozammel Haque said the decision to recommend the cancellation of all five state titles, including Ziaur Rahman, by the National Council of Freedom Fighters (Jamuka) was not politically motivated, it was documented. At the next subcommittee meeting, the final decision will be made if the role of the killers is presented with documentary evidence.

On Wednesday, the minister told Ittefaq that there are examples of title cancellation not only in Bangladesh but also in other countries around the world. The honorary titles have been revoked by the actions of many. He said that Pakistan had given the title “Pakistan to the flag” to Professor Ibrahim. But then the country took it up again as it supported the six-point movement. Even if someone obtains the title once, the government can later withdraw it if their activities go against the country and independence. They reviewed everything and made recommendations considering people’s feelings towards the liberation war and freedom.

AQM Mozammel Haque further said that the names of Khandaker Mostaq, Ziaur Rahman, Mahbubul Alam Chashi and many others were discussed at the Jamuka meeting on Tuesday. Documentary evidence of his involvement in the Bangabandhu assassination and his role have been discussed.

Probably without legal complications: Minister of Justice

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Anisul Haque said there were probably no legal complications in the cancellation of former President Ziaur Rahman’s freedom fighter title. Whoever has ruined the spirit of Bangladesh’s liberation war by using the name of freedom fighter, does he have any right to have that title? I left this question to people. The justice minister was answering a question from journalists after receiving the corona vaccine at the Kurmitola General Hospital yesterday.

Earlier Tuesday, the National Council of Freedom Fighters (Jamuka) recommended the cancellation of the ‘Bir Uttam’ title of the late President Ziaur Rahman, one of the founders of BNP and one of the sector commanders of the War of Liberation. The reasons for this decision have been mentioned, including involvement in the plot to assassinate the father of the nation and founder of Bangladesh, President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and some other allegations, including the rehabilitation of Razakars in politics.

In addition, it has been recommended that Khandaker Mushtaq Ahmed’s name be removed from the state list of “memorable” people for his contribution to the liberation war; Who assumed the presidency after the murder of Bangabandhu. Those implicated in the Bangabandhu murder and those convicted have also been advised to cancel the title.

By the way, after the liberation war of 1971, 6 people received the title of ‘Bir Uttam’ as the second highest medal for their heroic contribution in the war and Ziaur Rahman’s name was at number 3 on the list. Among those whose names were on the list were all members of the armed forces except Abdul Quader Siddiqui. The title was announced in a bulletin published by the Ministry of Defense in 1982. It was later implemented by an executive order from the president. Which is published in the military bulletin. Now, the National Council of Freedom Fighters has recommended its cancellation. The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs will implement it.
