A parliamentary committee has suggested that the Madrasa Board of Education entrance exam answer sheets in Bengali, English and mathematics be evaluated by other teachers. The recommendation was made at a meeting of the Parliamentary Commission of Government Institutions last Thursday (March 4). According to the rules, neither the ministry nor the government have an obligation to implement the recommendations of the parliamentary commission.
In this regard, Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, a committee member and deputy general secretary of the Awami League, told BBC Bangla: That means there is weakness between them. Many parliamentarians have raised this issue. That is why the discussion has taken place.
He said it appears that not all teachers in the same stream can correctly view student answer sheets. After passing the presentation, students move on to higher education and then have to take many exams for the job.
Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said, “We want them to be properly qualified and assessed in the same way so that they don’t have to face problems later if they are properly assessed here. But there is also a crisis of qualified teachers in these subjects. Again, there is a tendency among many to give additional numbers. The committee thinks that these problems will be solved if the evaluation is done with another type of teacher.
ASM Firoz, chairman of the committee, told reporters: “The government spends a lot of money on madrassa education, but we don’t see the desired results. The quality of their education is not achieved as expected. We do not see students moving from the Alia environment to playing a role in important sectors. That is why we have recommended to the Madrasa Board of Education to evaluate the presentation of textbooks in Bengali, English and mathematics for teachers of any other medium. If this is done, students will feel pressured and will try to improve their quality.
He further said: “There is a tendency among many teachers in madrasa educational institutions to approve students for the sake of their jobs. If our recommendations are implemented, they will not have this opportunity.
However, many madrasa teachers feel that the crisis over teachers has subsided in recent years and that madrasa teachers are sufficient to adequately assess these issues.
Mohammad Yusuf, director of the Haji Fazil Ahmad Dakhil Madrasa in Hatiyar, Noakhali, said teachers who have passed a bachelor’s or master’s degree now teach subjects like math or English. This year at Corona we have also arranged to teach math and English to students separately. Now teachers are standard too. Therefore, it does not seem necessary to evaluate books with other teachers.
Oli Ahmed, director of Raghurampur Islamia Dakhil Madrasa in Comilla Sadar Upazila, says: “Madrasa education has a uniqueness that must be taken into account. Now many good quality teachers teach Bengali, English and math in madrasas. Many students of our madrasa have attended and are pursuing higher studies in these subjects. Many are also doing government jobs. Maybe there are problems with a handful of teachers. Your training can be arranged.
He added that the parliamentary committee’s concerns were understandable. But now, as in primary or secondary, teachers have to pass the government registration exam and apply for the job.
Experienced on the madrasa, Chairman of the Department of Persian Language and Literature, Dhaka University, Professor. Mohammad Bahauddin said: “Those who teach Bengali, mathematics and English in madrasas have passed the faculty and university. But they do not study in madrasas. In some madrasas there may be accusations of incompetence against a certain teacher. If you think about it, it will create new confusion. These are unnecessary thoughts. Instead, the main goal should be to make management more transparent and to ensure the appointment of more qualified teachers. “
