According to the striking organization, the Greater Sylhet Stone Traders and Workers Unity Council was formed with all industry stakeholders, including stone extraction, sale and marketing, to demand the opening of stone quarries in Sylhet.
The organization has been running various programs for about three months requiring permission to extract stones from stone quarries in a traditional way. On December 3, the central Shaheed Minar in Sylhet was given 72 hours to open the stone quarry in Sylhet. The strike was declared without response. In the first phase, a 48-hour strike was observed on December 9 in the Sylhet district. A strike has been called in the Sylhet division in public transport because the demand was not met even after the program was observed.
Shabbir Ahmed, organizing secretary for Oikya Parishad, owner of Sylhet Divisional Truck-Pickup-Covered Van, said the stone quarry is involved in the livelihood of about one million people. As the quarries are closed, low-income workers have problems with their families. Pickup truck owners who participate in transportation services are also in crisis due to the quarry closure. Many transportation owners have purchased vehicles with bank loans. They have become the defendants in the case because they could not repay the loan.
Shabbir Ahmed said the program was being carried out peacefully. If the demand is not satisfied even after 72 hours, a more stringent schedule will be given.
