The university authorities have decided to form a court to recommend punishment for academic crimes against him.

The decision was made at a meeting of the university union on Wednesday, said the university’s vice chancellor (administration), Professor Muhammad Samad.

He told bdnews24.com: “A report has been presented at the union meeting to the effect that the investigation committee has found evidence of allegations against the two teachers.”

“The meeting decided to form a tribunal. But it has not been decided with whom this tribunal will be constituted. It will be decided by the rector of the university.”

In this regard, Vice Chancellor Prof. Akhtaruzzaman told bdnews24.com, “Everything will be in accordance with the rules and regulations.”

In December 2016, an eight-page research article entitled ‘A New Dimension of Colonialism and Pop Culture: A Case Study of Cultural Imperialism’, co-authored by Samia Rahman and Mahfuzul Haque Marjan, was published in a journal by the university called ‘Social Science Review’.

However, it was alleged that it was a fake five-page copy of an article entitled “The Subject and Power” by French philosopher Michel Foucault, published in the 1982 Critical Inquiry magazine of the University of Chicago.

In September 2016, the University of Chicago Press reported the theft to Dhaka University authorities through a written complaint.

Not only Michelle Foucault, but Samia and Marjan were also accused of copying page after page of the intellectual Edward Sayed’s book “Culture and Imperialism.”

In light of this, on September 27, 2016, the University Union formed a research committee headed by the then Vice Chancellor (Education) of Dhaka University, Professor Nasrin Ahmed.

The committee presented its report last year after a lengthy investigation. The report did not recommend any punishment for the allegations.

Subsequently, the university union appointed AFM Mezbahuddin, a member of the university union and a lawyer for the Supreme Court, to make legal recommendations in this regard.

The inquiry commission report was raised at a union meeting on Wednesday almost three years later.

Professor Nasreen Ahmad told bdnews24.com on Thursday: “The plagiarism allegations have been proven in our investigation. In our investigation, it was discovered that six research articles co-authored by them were duplicated after paragraph after paragraph.”

In addition to teaching at Dhaka University, Samia Rahman also worked as a news anchor and television host. Mahfuzul Haque Marjan, a professor in the Department of Criminology, was a student of Samia Rahman.

The investigation committee had to face various pressures to investigate them.

Nasreen Ahmad said: “When there is a complaint about our colleagues, we try to be very careful so that no injustice is done to them.

“But when we start asking about them, there’s a lot of pressure from all sides. A lot of noise started. Anyway, at least we didn’t go down without explaining ourselves first.”

He said the investigation took a little longer because of his illness. “We have already submitted the report,” he said. Why was the matter late in the union? I was surprised to see that. “

In this context, former Vice Chancellor Nasrin Ahmad said that the university administration should be more strict in controlling thefts in the investigation.

“It just came to our notice then. But the university administration needs to be tough on recurring plagiarism. We have also noticed that plagiarism is increasing these days. We need to have a clear law on how to handle it.”

All four autonomous universities in the country, including Dhaka University, are governed by Ordinance 73. But there is nothing specific about the punishment for theft. But theft often happens in universities.

The research committee also recommended the formulation of a policy on theft, said Professor Sadeka Halim, dean of the faculty of social sciences, a member of the research committee.

He told bdnews24.com: But if any of the teachers commit immoral acts, there is a law that prohibits it.

“Pleasure falls into immorality. We have also recommended in the research report that the university formulate a policy on plagiarism ”.
