Before giving that epic speech on March 7, 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had two great challenges in front of him. On the one hand, there was the possibility of making himself known to the world as a separatist if independence was declared; On the other hand, protect the freedom-loving people of this country so that their dreams are not shattered. But Bangabandhu was able to find a wonderful combination of two opposing demands in his historic speech. Bangabandhu’s prudence in speech, his intelligent position brought him to a unique height in politics. This is what the country’s famous politicians and researchers think. They have given that opinion to Kaler Kantho when evaluating Bangabandhu’s speech on March 7.
They said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman held talks with the leaders of the policy-making level of the Awami League at different times before his speech on March 7. Bangabandhu also spoke with his wife Fazilatun Nesha Mujib. Pakistani President Yahya Khan also spoke with Bangabandhu. Talking to everyone, Bangabandhu decided on his own. In his speech he expressed his firm position by adopting moderation. In his speech he expressed his position on the independence of the country and also kept the door open for talks with Pakistan.
Amir Hossain Amu, a member of the advisory council of the Awami League, said: “Bangabandhu called for a movement of non-cooperation by highlighting the 23-year history of Pakistan’s rule, exploitation, torture, oppression and deprivation.” On the other hand, he described the preparations for the liberation war and the guerrilla war leading the Bengalis to free themselves from exploitation. Bangabandhu said because of his political foresight, “Even if I can’t give orders, you have to deal with the enemy with whatever you have.” He called for the formation of Sangram Parishads led by the Awami League in neighborhoods, mahallas, police stations and districts. He said in his speech: “When I have donated blood, I will give more blood; I will free the people of this inshallah country. ‘ It is because of such resolute morale and a statement that unarmed Bengalis are motivated to go into armed struggle against the exploitation and government of Pakistan. “
Tofail Ahmed, another member of the Awami League’s advisory council, was very affectionate and close to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He has recalled Bangabandhu’s speech on March 7 and his perspective in various writings. In an article sent to the media on Saturday, Tofail Ahmed said: “Yahya Khan unilaterally suspended the March 3 session of the National Assembly convened on March 1, 1971 during a meeting of the Parliamentary Party of the Awami League in the Hotel Purbani to draft the constitution on the basis of six points. ” Immediately the fire burned like fire. In the direction of Bangabandhu we went to Paltan Maidan. There I burned the Pakistani flag and raised the flag of the independent Bengal. Bangabandhu led the Swadhin Bangla Kendriya Chhatra Sangram Parishad formation comprising the Chhatra League and Dakshur (Central Dhaka Chhatra Sangsad University). On March 3, the ‘Declaration of Independence’ was read in front of Bangabandhu. Then comes the historic March 7. March 7 did not arrive in a single day. It has come step by step. Bangabandhu declared its independence through his March 7 speech. “
Tofail Ahmed said: “He (Bangabandhu) was a wise leader. He was always careful not to be attacked. He took special care to obtain the support and recognition of the international community. He spoke and acted cautiously so that no one could label Bangabandhu and Bangladesh as separatists. Bangamata is remembered here with reverence. On the night of March 7, Bangabandhu was walking on the veranda thinking about tomorrow’s speech. The respected Bangamata Fazilatun Nesha Mujib said in fear: ‘What do you have to think? All your life you have been in politics with one goal. You have endured imprisonment, oppression, and torture. He has repeatedly been to the gallows. You have embraced death. I will say everything you believe about the believing soul. Exactly Bangabandhu delivered a speech on March 7 from a believing heart. This is a speech that shocks the world. No speech in the world has been delivered so many times. He gave an unwritten speech from a believing heart, saying what he believed. The enemy is ready with everything, including ammunition, machine guns, cannons, helicopter-artillery, tanks. If we declare independence directly, we will jump on the unarmed people. Many people wanted to tell Bangabandhu to say today, Bangladesh is independent today. But Bangabandhu was not persuaded by anyone. From the morning of March 7, the torrent of people began to arrive at the racecourse. So freedom is on everyone’s lips. “
Recalling, Tofail Ahmed said: “I remember an incident. At noon on March 7, I didn’t mention my favorite leader. We both went to Bangabandhu. Bangabandhu was speaking with his hands on our shoulders. When our leader told Bangabandhu, (he used to call him Leader) ‘Leader, today, but without the declaration of full independence, the people will not obey.’ Putting his hand on our shoulder and speaking his name, Bangabandhu said in English: ‘I am the leader of the people. I will guide you. He won’t guide me. Go and do your duty. He said goodbye to us and went upstairs. “
Tofail Ahmed said: “We left Dhanmondi at 3.15pm. He arrived at the racecourse at 3:15 pm Bangabandhu began his speech at 3:30 pm. Racecourse ground with slogans of more than 10 lakh people. Present on the occasion were the central leaders of the Awami League, including four national leaders Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, M Mansur Ali and AHM Kamaruzzaman. Bangabandhu stood up to give a speech and looked around. He placed the glasses on the podium in front of the spout. From the depths of his heart he believed, for which he had fought all his life, he went to the gallows, with that believing spirit, he called the people of Bengal, ‘My brothers’. Then, for 19 minutes straight, he recited the epic that shook the world. In his speech, he basically declared independence. Bangabandhu had two paths in front of him. One. Declare independence. Two. Make thoughtful statements without taking responsibility for dividing Pakistan, without being branded a separatist. He did both. Bangabandhu knew the situation that day. What did he tell us. So the army was ready. Bombers and helicopter gunships patrol overhead. As long as Bangabandhu says in this language that Bangladesh is independent today, they will start shooting. That is why Bangabandhu spoke knowing everything. He was such a prudent leader that he dealt with all conspiracies and imposed four conditions on the military ruler: repeal martial law, return army headquarters, conduct a judicial investigation into the murders that took place in recent days, and hand over power. elected representatives. By imposing these four conditions, he was not called a separatist. The Pakistanis tried to label him a separatist. But he was alert and aware. On the other hand, the whole speech was about the tactics of the next people’s war and the declaration of independence of Bangladesh ”.
Rashed Khan Menon, chairman of the Bangladesh Workers’ Party and former Daksh vice chairman, told Kaler Kanth: “Independence has a strong connection with the March 7 speech. Because with this speech we have won the war of liberation ”. He said: “Before that speech, Begum Mujib had told Bangabandhu: ‘You have to remember, there are guns behind you and people in front. You decide what you say. Bangabandhu’s speech later gave people a tremendous boost. “
Writer and researcher Mohiuddin Ahmed told Kaler Kanth: “On March 1, before the March 7 speech, people burned the Pakistani flag. The field was ready for independence. There was pressure from various sectors to declare independence. On the other hand, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman then obtained the mandate of the people. He was also the leader of the opposition at the time. There was always an attempt to portray him as a separatist. He did not want to take on this responsibility. As a result, what he said in his March 7 speech was a great challenge.
Mohiuddin Ahmed said: ‘On March 7, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman spoke with the high command of his party. He had talks with Tajuddin Ahmed, Syed Nazrul Islam, Khandaker Mushtaq Ahmed, M Mansur Ali and others. A conservative section of the Awami League was also in favor of Pakistan. On March 7, Yahya Khan also called Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and told him not to say anything that would not be going back. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered the historic speech in that context. He further said: “Speaking with various parties, including the Awami League high command, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman understood that the unilateral declaration of independence would be untimely. As a result, he delivered a speech to the liking of all parties. He paved the way for talks by adding four conditions to join the national session. Again the crowd was told to prepare for a war of resistance. He said twice in his speech: “This time the fight is for our freedom.” He provoked the crowd by saying that he would hit them with rice and water. The crowd was satisfied. The Pakistani rulers also understood that Sheikh Mujib had left the door open for talks. In his speech on March 7, he was able to meet the challenge of overcoming both sides. “
