Two defendants, Zikrul Islam and Ariful Islam, were arrested at the scene of the murder of blogger Washikur. Another defendant named Saiful Islam was arrested later in the case. He was in jail at the time of the murder. He was shown arrested in the case on charges of involvement in the murder. He later gave a confessional statement under section 164 in court. There are specific conspiracy allegations against all defendants in the case.

On July 20, 2016, the court ordered the trial of five members of the banned militant group Ansarullah Bangla Team in the murder case.

Blogger Washikur was stabbed to death on March 30, 2015 in Begunbari in Dhaka’s Tejgaon Industrial Zone. Immediately after the incident, the mob chased and trapped the Zikrullah and Ariful madrasa students. Saiful was arrested in the Jatrabari area with weapons a few days before the murder. He was later shown arrested in the case on charges of participating in a plot to assassinate him. The day after the murder, Monir Hossain, Washikur’s brother-in-law, filed a lawsuit against the four at the Tejgaon Industrial Zone Police Station.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) investigated and on September 2, 2015 charged five members of Ansarullah. The indictment alleges that fugitive defendant Abdullah planned and executed the entire murder case.
