The United States has said it has seized 1.1 million barrels of missiles bound for Iran from Yemen and Venezuela. The Trump administration said Thursday that the missiles and oil had been seized multiple times in the past. The release of the information is seen as a step towards increased pressure on Tehran ahead of the presidential elections on November 3. British news agency Reuters reported.

The seizure came when the US Treasury and State Departments imposed sanctions on 11 companies and individuals for allegedly participating in the petrochemical trade with Iran.

But Acting District of Columbia Attorney Michael Sherwin said Thursday that the release of the information by the judiciary has nothing to do with politics. The move started last summer.

The lawsuit alleges that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps secretly smuggled weapons to Yemen and oil to Venezuela.

The United States sold 1.1 million barrels of Iranian oil shipped to Venezuela, according to the Assistant Attorney General for the National Security Division, John Demers. These were seized earlier this year.
