The government has finally set the price for this much-needed commodity to curb the skyrocketing price of rice. In fact, the government has been forced to take such a tough stance. Because it was not possible to control the rogue merchants union.
Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder held a meeting with rice mill owners and rice traders at the food building on Tuesday. At that meeting it was decided that from now on, a bag of good quality Miniket rice weighing 50 kg will have to be sold in Millgate at Rs 2,575 and medium quality rice at Rs 2,250. This means that the price of miniket rice per kg will be Rs 51 50 paise and Rs 45 for medium quality rice.
Meanwhile, the Food Ministry has confirmed the news of the rice price fixing with a press release. Not only that, if the rice is not sold on the market at a fixed price, the minister has also announced that the fine rice will be imported within the next 10 days.
As we have seen, some traders have continuously increased the price of rice even after the excellent rice yield this time. Behind the rise in prices is also its unreasonable demand, “rice prices are higher in the market.” If they cannot sell rice at a higher price, they lose money. Not only that, even after signing an agreement with the government on the same pretext, they did not supply rice demanding higher prices. In other words, they have tried to take the people and the government hostage for more profit.
But the epidemic continues in the country. When the rice merchants should have been by the side of the people in a humane way, people were shocked by seeing their inhuman faces. In a few days, the price of rice has risen by at least Rs 8-10 per kg. But the supply of paddy rice and rice in the country is adequate.
The Food Minister, who is one of the largest rice traders in the country, said that a class of unscrupulous rice mill owners had accumulated rice and rice illegally. This is why the market has become unstable. Shouldn’t he have made such a comment without knowing it?
Our question is why isn’t the food minister taking action against these unscrupulous traders even though they have such specific information? Will the market remain stable only if the price of rice is fixed?
We believe that setting the price of rice is a good measure and some more initiatives are needed. In particular, legal action must be taken against dishonest traders. Otherwise, they will do the same thing over and over again.
