Dhaka: The trial of nine people, including the publisher of Prothom Alo, Matiur Rahman, has started in the case of the death of Naimul Abrar Rahat, 15, a student at Dhaka Residential College, who was electrocuted during the anniversary celebrations of Prothom Alo magazine ‘Kishore Alo’.
On Thursday (November 12), Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayesh ordered the trial to begin with the formation of charges.
The court set December 14 to take evidence in the case.
The defendants in the case are: Matiur Rahman, editor of Prothom Alo, Kabir Bakul, Shubhashish Pramanik Shuvo, Muhitul Alam Pavel, Shah Puran Tushar, Jasim Uddin Tapu, Mosharraf Hossain, Md. Sumon and Kamrul Hawladar. All the defendants are out on bail.
However, another accused editor of Kishore Alo, Anisul Haque, has been acquitted.
Naimul Abrar Rahat, a ninth grader, died after being electrocuted in the Kishore Alo program at Dhaka Residential Model College on November 1 last year. After being electrified that afternoon, Abrar was taken to the Universal Medical College Hospital in Mohakhali where doctors pronounced him dead.
Then, on November 8 last year, Naimul Abrar’s father, Mojibur Rahman, brought the case against Matiur Rahman, editor and publisher of the daily Prothom Alo and editor of Kishore Alo. He was charged with wrongful death under Section 304 (a) of the Penal Code.
The investigating officer of the case deputy police inspector of Mohammadpur (SI) said. Abdul Alim presented the report. The report said evidence of negligence on the part of the Kishore Alo authorities was found in Naimul Abrar’s death.
