Most of the Dhaka University students have expressed their displeasure at the decision of the undergraduate and final year graduate students to take the exams by keeping the residential hall closed. Residential student Suraiya Rahman has claimed that the university’s decision is inhumane.

Suraiya Rahman, a residency student from the 2016-17 session, said: “The decision to keep the residential room closed and take the exam is inhumane. There are many kinds of difficulties here. Where will residential students stay if they have to take the physical exam? Student safety is also an important issue. We hear that the test will be taken in the morning and in the afternoon. Winters are very fast afternoons. In that case, many people will find it difficult to travel. The room should be opened considering these issues.

Previously, in a press release issued by the public relations department of the university on Thursday night, it was reported that honors and masters exams will begin on December 26, maintaining social distance in compliance with health regulations. . Dhaka University (DU) authorities said the decision was made to resolve the session jam.

During the second corona wave, students in many districts also feel there is a health risk from taking tests in person.

When asked if it is possible to comply with hygiene rules if the room is opened in Corona situation, the students said that not only for all the years, but also for the final year students who have to take the exam.

Ijab, a student at Vijay Ekattar Hall, said: ‘My father has recently recovered from Corona. I have nowhere to stay in Dhaka. If I want to take the exam in this situation, I have to get up in trouble or in a hotel. My family’s financial situation makes it very stressful to rent a disaster or a hotel. As this is the final exam for the last year, the room must be open to candidates for the duration of the exam. If necessary, there will be one or two people in a room. Then it is possible to follow the rules of hygiene.

Rokeya Hall student resident Anika Bushra said: ‘The students will return to Dhaka by bus, boat and train. There are also elderly people in the homes of relatives in the corona situation, there are members who are at risk of corona. Why would they want to let us stay in this situation?

Meanwhile, a group of students demanded Thursday that all academic activities, including the Dhaka University 2017-18 session fourth-year exam, be sped up and the application time for the 43rd BCS extended.

Authorities say students have applied to take exams at different times to enter the job market.

Anika Bushra said: “The university authorities should not give priority only to the BCS or the labor market. Those of us who want to study abroad and do research will be harmed if the quality of the studies is not ensured, the curriculum is reduced, and exams are taken without completing the course. The authorities must consider all students.

Asif Karim Chowdhury, a resident student at Jasim Uddin Hall, said the same.

He said: ‘Those of us who live in the village will face big problems because of the decision of the authorities. If the room is not open, the test cannot be performed. And if it is decided to conduct a physical examination without opening a residential ward, the authorities will have to organize alternative accommodation.

Umama Fatema, another student at Dhaka University, said: “The authorities are somehow avoiding the issue of student safety. It has been decided that the room will not be opened. But they are not saying why it will not open. They say that students will take exams in the course, intermediate, or online tutorials with assignments or orally. Meanwhile, the student Internet problem has not yet been solved. Our teachers have said that when the campus opens, review classes will be taken before the exams. It is also necessary. Many students will be deprived if they don’t have classes.

He added: “Now we are getting good news about the vaccine. The university should form a planning committee to coordinate with the government. Indian universities are already discussing when the vaccine can arrive and what will happen after the vaccine arrives. University authorities should now think about how to open the campus considering the protection of the health of students.

The political organizations of the University of Dhaka have issued a statement protesting against the physical examination without opening a residential ward.

When asked if the decision to close the residential hall would change, Vice Chancellor Akhtaruzzaman told The Daily Star: “So far, what was announced in Thursday’s press release is the decision of the authorities. We are considering the advantages and Disadvantages of students If the decision is changed, this will be reported through a press release.

Although it was mentioned that the test would start from the 26th, nothing was mentioned in the notification regarding the date within which the test must be completed.

When asked about the matter, Vice Chancellor Akhtaruzzaman told The Daily Star: “The departments will decide the exam schedule in coordination with the students, considering the advantages and disadvantages of the students.”

If you want to know what the departments think about the exam, the chair of the philosophy department, Prof. Harunur Rashid told The Daily Star: “Nothing can be said at the moment. Such a decision has been made at the Academic Council meeting. “The students have objected. However, the authorities did not give formal instructions to the departments. Hopefully, the instructions will arrive within this week. Then we will make a decision of the department.”
