The only defendant in the Dhaka University (DU) student rape case, Majnu, a close relative of the victim, has testified in a BBC court in Bangladesh. Judge Begum Mosa of the 6th Tribunal for the Suppression of the Abuse of Women and Children in Dhaka on Thursday. He testified in the court of Kamrunnahar. The testimony of six of the 21 witnesses in the case ended.

After taking evidence, the state-appointed attorney Rabiul Islam Robi questioned the defendant Majnoor. After questioning, the court set Sunday for the next hearing. Previously, the defendant Majnu was brought before the court. The testimony began in his presence.

In early September 20, the plaintiff in the case and the victim’s father testified in court. The next day, September 21, the victim testified against Majnoor. Then, on September 23, three people, including two girlfriends of the victim, testified.

Meanwhile, the case was scheduled for September 9. But on this day Begum Mosa, judge of Dhaka’s 6th Court of Suppression of Abuse of Women and Children. Acting Judge Syed Jaglul Hossain set September 20 to take evidence as Kamrunnahar was on leave. As of early August 26, a virtual court had brought charges against Majnoor in the case. With this, the formal trial against the accused began. The court set September 9 to take testimony. The court set August 16 after receiving the charge sheet for the case. In early March 18, DB Police Inspector Abu Siddique filed a charge sheet against Majnu in the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Court. On the same day, the court ordered that the case be transferred to the Tribunal for the Repression of Women and Children for a later trial. But no action was taken as the court was on general leave due to Corona.

On January 8, RAB arrested a man named Majnu in connection with the rape from the Sheora bus stop below the Cantonment police station. On January 9, the court granted Majnoor a seven-day preventive detention. On January 17, Majnu pleaded guilty and testified in court. Since then, Majnu has been in jail.

It is worth mentioning that the student was raped on January 5. Later, the student’s father became a plaintiff and filed a case with the Cantonment Police Station under the Prevention of Abuse of Women and Children Act.
