Mahbubey Alam died at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka on Sunday night. He was 61 years old. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Mahbubey Alam was admitted to Dhaka CMH on September 4 with a fever. There, the sample test detected his coronavirus infection.
He was transferred to the ICU on September 18 after his condition worsened on September 18.
However, Justice Minister Anisul Haque said that the latest coronavirus infection test was negative.

Mahbubey Alam’s coffin was brought to the Supreme Court, his workplace of 45 years, after 11 a.m. Monday.
After the Janaza at the premises of the Illustrious Bar Association of the Supreme Court, representatives of various sectors of society, including former colleagues, paid their last respects to the former president of the Bar Association of the Supreme Court.
AM Amin Uddin, president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, said that the coffin would be taken to the Martyrs Intellectual Cemetery in Mirpur at 12 noon.
Mahbubey Alam, who was Bangladesh’s top legal officer until his death, will be buried there.

Mahbubey Alam was appointed Attorney General in 2009. He was also President of the Bangladesh Bar Association.
As Attorney General, Mahbubey Alam played an important role in the trial for crimes against humanity at the Supreme Court in 1971.
He also dealt with the Fifth, Seventh, Thirteenth and Sixteenth Amendment cases to the Constitution.
Mahbubey Alam was also involved in the murder case of the Father of the Bangabandhu Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was the chief prosecutor in the BDR mutiny murder case.
He was elected president of the Bar Association of the Supreme Court for one term and secretary for another term.

Mahbubey Alam was born on February 16, 1949 in the village of Mouchamandra in Louhjong upazila de Munshiganj.
He earned his honors degree in Political Science from Dhaka University in 1986 and his degree in Public Administration in 1989. Later, in 1972, he earned an LLB degree from Dhaka University.
Mahbubey Alam, who was involved in the left-wing movement in his student life, later served as vice president of the Bangladesh Youth Union.
After the fall of the Soviet Union, after the split in the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Mahbubey Alam left politics and became fully active in the legal profession.
However, he joined the Bangladesh Bar Association and became a member of the Dhaka Bar Association in 1973.
Mahbubey Alam was allowed to practice law in the Superior Court Division of the Supreme Court in 1975 and in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court in 1970. In 1997, he was inducted as lead attorney in the Appeals Division.

When the Awami League was in power, Mahbubey Alam served as Additional Attorney General from November 15, 1996 to October 4, 2001. He was president of the Supreme Court Bar Association before the state of emergency was declared in 2008.
After Sheikh Hasina’s arrest during the army-controlled government, many of the top lawyers backed down, but Mahbubey Alam stood firm in favor of the Awami League president. Apparently, this is why Sheikh Hasina trusted him.
After the Awami League came to power, Mahbubey Alam was appointed Attorney General on January 13, 2009. He was in charge for 11 consecutive years after that.
Mahbubey Alam wanted to be the Awami League candidate from his Munshiganj birthplace in the last parliamentary elections. However, he was asked to continue as Attorney General without running for office.
Binta Mahbub, wife of Mahbubey Alam, a special fan of Rabindra Sahitya, is a painter. Between her two children, her son Sumon Mahbub has been in journalism for a long time, while her daughter Shishir Kona is in the legal profession.
