Family members said he had ‘committed suicide’ while hanging out with a fan at his home in Durgapur, Rajshahi, sometime on Saturday night.

Sajib’s relatives claim that he committed suicide out of frustration at not having a chance at the upcoming Bangabandhu T20 Cup.

Sajib’s cousin, Mofazzal Hossain, said Sajib committed suicide by tying a rope around his neck in the bedroom at some point on Saturday night. The next morning, without getting a response from the house, the people of the house saw him hanging out the window. The police were then informed.

Durgapur Police Station OC Hasmat Ali said police went to the scene on Sunday afternoon and recovered Sajib’s hanging body. Burial of the body was allowed as there were no objections from the family. A UD case has been filed in this regard.

Sajib’s older brother, Tashikul Islam, said that Sajib had a lot of interest in playing cricket since childhood. Therefore, the family has had to eat a lot of gossip.

He was admitted to a cricket academy called ‘Bangla Track’ in Katakhali, Rajshahi, to train. Khaled Mahmud Sujan is the academy’s executive director and head coach.

Khaled Mahmud Sujan told bdnews24.com: “I can’t believe a decent and talented boy like Sajib can do something like that. It really bothered me to hear the news. He was the starter and middle pace. First Division played for Shinepukur. His name was not. he was in the Bangabandhu T20 Cup player draft. That’s why Sajib will commit suicide; I’m surprised to think of it. “

Sajibul Islam is the son of Morshed Ali from the village of Jhaluka in Durgapur upazila of Rajshahi. He has played for U-15, 18 and 19 teams. He was a reserve member of the U-19 World Cup team in 2016. He toured Sri Lanka as a member of the U-19 national team. Recently, Sajib Bangabandhu was preparing to play in the T20 Cup. However, there was no chance of getting any teams as their name was not on the player’s draft.
