The world’s largest cyclone is heading towards the Philippines. It is expected to reach the southern island of Luzon. Hundreds of thousands of people were ordered to evacuate on Saturday to avoid possible damage from Category 5 cyclone Gani. UK news agency Reuters reported.
The hurricane, moving at a speed of 215 kilometers per hour, could trigger landslides on Sunday. This is the strongest cyclone since Hayan Haiyan struck in November 2013. At that time, more than 6,300 people died.
People are being evacuated from coastal and landslide-prone areas, said Gremil Naz, a local disaster management official.
Cyclone Molav killed 22 people last week. Most were residents of the southern province of Manila. Hurricane Gani is expected to follow the same path.
Authorities are fighting to maintain social distance by evacuating people in the Corona situation. Local officials have announced the cessation of all activities in the port, including fishing and boating.
Cyclone Gani is moving west from the Pacific Ocean at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour. Rains, floods and landslides are expected in Manila and 14 surrounding provinces on Saturday night.
