BBC Director General Dim Davy said the BBC was committed to uncovering the truth and establishing an independent commission of inquiry.
Earl this month, Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, demanded an independent investigation. Spencer said “extreme dishonesty” was used to interview Diana. Spencer’s letter to Dave, published in the UK Daily Mail, said that Bashir had shown him some fake bank documents. Where it is said, the security forces have paid two high-ranking members of the royal family to share Diana’s secret information. After seeing these, Spencer arranged for Bashir to interview his sister Diana.
Earl Spencer said: “I wouldn’t have arranged for Bashir to interview my sister if they hadn’t shown me the papers.”
A Kensington Palace statement said Prince William, Diana’s eldest son, had initially welcomed the investigation. He said: “This is a step in the right direction. This, of course, should establish the truth behind the Panorama interview and the BBC decision makers at the time.
In another interview with the Daily Mail, Spencer further alleged that the Panorama reporter Bashir had made a series of false and defamatory accusations against several important members of the royal family during a meeting with him. Bashir did all of this to present himself as more loyal to Diana.
