The Socialist Student Front condemned the police baton charge and the arrest in the torchlight procession

The Socialist Student Front has strongly condemned the indictment, the attack and the police baton arrest in a torchlight procession protesting the death of the writer Mushtaq Ahmed in prison.

Mushtaq Ahmed, a writer arrested under the Digital Security Act, died last night in Kashimpur jail in police custody, according to a press release issued by the Central Committee of the Socialist Student Front on Friday night. On February 6, groups of progressive students protesting the brutal police baton loaded the torchlight procession, leading several bombings, and he was arrested.

It was further said that Nasir Uddin Prince, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Mukta Barai, Dhaka City Branch Chairman, Anik Kumar Das, General Secretary, Anarul Islam, Organization Secretary, Sohagi Samia, Secretary of school affairs, Munni Sardar, Narayanganj district leader and Muskan were wounded in the attack. Islam, the leader of the Bangladesh Student Union Sakhawat Fahad, Asrafi Nitu, Meghamalla Basu, Shravan Chowdhury, Shahadat Hossain, Raihan Atiq and at least 40 others.

Among them, Munni Sardar, Sohagi Samia and Muskan Islam are in critical condition, the student front said.

Strongly condemning and protesting the attack, the Socialist Student Front demanded the trial of the police personnel involved in the attack and the immediate release of the detained leaders and activists.

A protest procession will take place from the TSC tomorrow at 12 noon to protest the attack.

Anik Roy, former general secretary of the student union, told The Daily Star that five of our leaders and activists had been detained by the police. Also, I can’t find another one. We believe that he has also been arrested.

Earlier in the evening, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Ramna Area Deputy Commissioner Sajjadur Rahman told a news conference that two protesters had been detained after police attacked them with batons in a Torchlight procession of left-wing student organizations protesting the death of Mushtaq Ahmed.
