A deputy inspector (SI) has been suspended for helping Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan, the main suspect in the death of Raihan Ahmed, to escape, who died in police custody at the Bandarbazar outpost in Sylhet.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police said in a statement Wednesday that Sub-Inspector Hasan Uddin had been fired for helping Akbar escape and hiding information.
The day after Akbar was fired and replaced by SI Shahin Ahmed, he too was fired and Hasan Uddin took over the outpost.
Raihan Ahmed, 33, a resident of Neharipara in the city, died an hour after being admitted to hospital in the early hours of October 11 after being seriously injured by police at the Bandarbazar outpost.
The next day, Tahmina Akhter, Raihan’s wife, filed a case against the unidentified defendant, citing the murder at the police station.
Initially, there was talk of beating to death during the robbery, but then the Sylhet Metropolitan Police formed a preliminary investigation committee based on the family’s allegations.
The investigation revealed the involvement of the outpost managers, SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan in charge of the outpost, agent Harunur Rashid, agent Touhid Mia and agent Titu Chandra Das were suspended.
ASI Ashek Elahi, ASI Qutb Ali and Constable Sajib Hossain were also withdrawn.
SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan ordered everyone to go to the police line, but the rest fled.
The Police Investigations Office, which is in charge of investigating the case, issued warnings at all immigration checkpoints across the country last Thursday to prevent Akbar from fleeing.
Later on Tuesday, the PBI arrested accused outpost police officer Titu Chandra Das, who was fired in the case.
Later, Judge Ziadur Rahman of the Sylhet Chief Metropolitan Magistrates Court granted a five-day pre-trial detention on the basis of a seven-day pre-trial request from investigating officer Muhidul Islam.
A three-member investigative committee was formed on Tuesday to identify accomplices in Akbar’s escape, headed by an additional inspector general from the police headquarters.
