Mentioning that the state apparatus has been under the patronage of fundamentalists for almost 30 years after Bangabandhu’s assassination, Liberation War Minister AKM Mozammel Haque said that the roots of fundamentalism run very deep and cannot be eradicated.

He spoke to reporters after paying tribute at the Shaheed Buddhijibi Memorial in Mirpur on Monday (December 14) morning.

On the occasion of the Day of the Martyrs Intellectuals, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs paid tribute to the intellectuals who were martyred in 1971 this morning. The Minister of Liberation War Affairs was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs AK Abdul Momen, the Minister of the Environment Shahab Uddin, the Minister of State for Culture KM Khalid, the Deputy Minister of Water Resources Enamul Haque Shamim, the Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Dhaka-18 MP Ilias Mollah, Dhaka. Aslamul Haque, 14-seat MP, former Maritime Transport Minister Shahjahan Khan and others.

The Liberation War minister said the state has run in the name of religion for some 30 years during the Pakistani government. Following the murder of Bangabandhu on August 15, 1975, Ziaur Rahman, Ershad and Khaleda Zia have led the state apparatus under the patronage of fundamentalists for 30 consecutive years. The roots of the fundamentalists run very deep. So it is not possible to eradicate them in a word.

He further said: “You must have noticed how the nation is united to eradicate them under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”

The Liberation War minister said that Bangabandhu had taught him not to take the law into his own hands. So we have not taken any action against them at any time. With our conscience, inspired by the principles of the liberation war, we are united to politically uproot this poison.

Regarding the list of Razakar, the minister said: “Before it was our moral duty to include the Razakar, there was no legal basis.” 15 days ago, the National Council of Freedom Fighters amended the law and approved the list of Razakars. The law to compile the list of Razakars will be approved in the next session of the National Assembly.

He further added that by making this list, no one should take offense to me and I shouldn’t be left out to show an additional favor. In order for us to make this list from the ground up with utmost care, action will be taken after the law is passed.

On the question of banning politics based on religion, he said: “Surely you know, the head of government sets the policy.” He will decide on this.
