Noting that unnecessary use of antibiotics, incorrect doses and a generally weakened immune system are creating serious diseases, Sheikh Hasina said: “Prevention is better than cure.” We must also ensure the affordable availability of next-generation antibiotics for all of us. He said that in 2015, inspired by the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan, Bangladesh formulated a national action plan for ‘Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance 2018-22’.
The Prime Minister of Bangladesh also thanked WHO, FAO and OIE, an important tripartite partner of the One Health Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, their initiative to establish this group and their concerted global efforts to address the serious antimicrobial resistance problem.
The group’s Vice-Chair, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Motley, and the Directors General of WHO, FAO and OIE also spoke at the event.
