The multitude of snails is increasing in the mango orchardCompensation has been allocated to the owners of the mango orchards of Khord Bausa village at the Arani junction of Bagha upazila of Rajshahi for the bird’s nest. A total of five garden owners received a lease of Tk 3,13,000 for the bird’s nest. Manjur Rahman Mukul, Sanar Uddin, Shahadat Hossain, Shafiqul Islam and Faruk Anwar from Khordd Bausa village will receive the allocated money.

The money has been allocated by the government for several years due to the loss of mango orchards due to the arrival of invited snails.

It emerged that on November 1, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change awarded this allowance as compensation to mango growers for snail nesting in the mango orchard in the village of Khord Bausa.

Mihir Kumar Dey, Forest Conservator, Wildlife and Nature Conservation Area, Dhaka, Zillur Rahman, Rajshahi Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Mehedi Hasan, Assistant Forest Conservator, Rajshahi Social Forest Department, Wildlife and Biodiversity Officer visited the orchard on Saturday morning (November 21) Hossain, Ranger Helim Raihan and Wildlife Inspector Jahangir Kabir.

During this time they exchanged views with the garden owners and the local population. Garden owners Manjur Rahman Mukul, Sanar Ali, Shahadat Hossain, Shafiqul Islam, Faruk Hossain, President of the Arani Union Parishad Rafiqul Islam, President of the A-League Union Prof Shafiqul Islam Nantu, Chairman of the Khord Guest Bird Conservation Committee Bausa Village Rafiqul Islam, Secretary General Shahadat Hossain Committee members were present at the time.

Officials said the orchard owners would receive the official payment through the local Upazila Nirbahi official within days.

Manjur Rahman Mukul, a local mango grower, said he cared for many mango trees from a single owner. Last year, there were no mangoes on 6 trees due to birds. This time also the birds have begun to sit. No trader is telling the price of the mango for the perched birds. They are thinking about this. They expect more damage this time than last year.

Bagha Upazila Agriculture Officer Shafiullah Sultan said: “Following the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner, Bagha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shahin Reza and I went to the garden last year, we inspected and found 37 birds nesting in the mango trees “. Then the probable price of the mangoes on the trees and the cost of care are calculated. According to the tree’s calculation, each year 3 lakh 13 lakhs can be lost.

Shafiullah Sultan, Bagha Upazila agriculture officer, said that at least 10 bighas of land should be purchased for a permanent bird sanctuary. The price of 36 mango trees must be fixed. More than two million rupees should be allocated for this. Both types of proposals were sent to the Ministry of Agriculture. But so far no decision has been made. He said he will be able to take action accordingly if he gets a government assignment.

It should be noted that at the end of the monsoon for several years, the snails began to nest in the mango orchards of the Khord Bausa village before hatching. At the end of October last year (2019), the birds hatched the chicks, but the chicks did not learn to fly; in this case, the tenant of the garden wants to take care of the garden. He wants to break the house and empty the mango tree. He also broke some nests from a tree. Some local bird watchers begged him not to enter the nest. At least until the kids learn to fly. At their request, he gave the birds 15 days to leave their nests. If you do not leave the nest within 15 days, the birds will destroy the nest. Supreme Court attorney Pragya Parmita Roy said the matter was brought to the attention of the court when the news was published in various outlets that day. Later, the court wanted to know why the area would not be declared a bird sanctuary in an order with rules. The Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner and Bagha Upazila Nirbahi Officer were ordered to submit a report to the court within 40 days after the determination of the probable amount of damage to the garden owner and garden tenant if the area is declared a sanctuary . Another committee was formed by convening Bagha Upazila agriculture officer Shafiullah Sultan and assistant forest curator Mehedi Hasan from the district administration. Committee members identified 36 mango trees damaged due to bird nests. They determined the amount of loss of three lakh 13 lakhs.
