Sylhet: Rabiul Islam, the fifth defendant in the case of raping a housewife by tying her husband to the dormitory at Murari Chand (MC) College in Sylhet, was also given a five-day pretrial detention by the court.
The investigating officer in the case, Shahparan Police Station Inspector (Investigation), Indranil Bhattacharya, presented it in the Second Court of the Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate at 3:30 pm on Monday (September 26) and requested a 7 days preventive detention.
Following the hearing, Judge Saifur Rahman granted a five-day preventive detention.
Sylhet City Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Jyotirmoy Sarkar confirmed the information to banglanews and said that the pre-trial detention of three defendants has been granted for five days.
Hours earlier, Saifur Rahman and Arjun Lashkar, the main defendants in the gang rape case, were brought before the same court and placed in preventive detention for five days.
Sylhet City Police Deputy Commissioner (Indictment) Amulya Kumar Chowdhury told banglanews that no lawyer appeared on behalf of the defendant during the remand hearing. For this reason, when the court judges wanted to know the statements of Saifur and Arjun, both affirmed their innocence and named Rajan, Tareq and Ainuddin involved in the incident.
They were brought before the courts under strict security. At that time, a large number of police guards drove them to court in a prison van.
On Friday (September 25), a BCL leader allegedly raped a woman while her husband was detained in the MC College dormitory. Upon receiving the news, police rescued the couple from the bedroom at around 10:30 pm. The raped girl was later admitted to the OCC center of the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
According to police and local sources, the newlyweds went to MC College by private car on Friday afternoon. In the afternoon, six MC College BCL leaders and activists grabbed the husbands and took them to the dormitory and beat them first. He later gang-raped his wife while holding her husband captive. Each of the BCL leaders lives in the dormitory. They are followers of the leader of the Awami League, Advocate Ranjit Sarkar Group, based in Tilagarh.
The rapist’s husband filed the case (21 (9) 2020) at the city’s Shahparan police station on Saturday morning, naming six people and charging two or three others.
Police also recovered weapons from Saifur’s room after the incident. Deputy Inspector (SI) Milton Sarkar from Shahparan Police Station brought another case in the incident. He filed a case (No. 22 (9) 2020) indicting Chhatra League cadre Saifur Rahman.
