Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that Sheikh Russell, the youngest son of the father of the Bangabandhu nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was named after him.
Speaking as a keynote guest on the occasion of Shaheed Sheikh Russell’s 57th birth anniversary on Sunday morning, the Prime Minister said that his younger brother, Sheikh Russell, was named after British philosopher Bertrand Russell.
Referring to the name ‘Russell’ given to him by his mother Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa, the Prime Minister said: “Father Bertrand was a great admirer of Russell. He used to read Russell’s books and explain them to his mother.” The mother became so obsessed with Russell’s philosophy that she named her youngest son Russell.
Recalling the time of Russell’s birth, he said, “I still remember the day Russell was born.” A small child will come to our family. Me, Kamal, Jamal, Rehana, we were all very excited and very excited. When will we hear the cry of that child, when will we hear his voice, when will we take him in our arms. And when that moment came, it was a moment of great joy for us. The little baby was the apple of our eyes.
He said little Russell’s father was in prison before he realized anything. Even when he went to visit us in jail, he used to cry for his father to go home. Russell had a hard time coming back from meeting his father. I had tears in my eyes all day.
The prime minister said Russell’s dream was to become an army officer. When he went to town, he would parade the children. Russell wanted to give the kids clothes. His mind was very generous.
Sheikh Hasina said that the Sheikh Russell National Council for Children and Adolescents was formed to develop children as patriots. At this time, quoting the line from the poet Sukant’s poem, he said: ‘I will make this world habitable for this child, this is my firm commitment to the newborn.
On the occasion of Sheikh Russell’s birthday, the Prime Minister unveiled a Shaheed Sheikh Russell ‘mural’ and inaugurated Ganobhaban’s ‘Shaheed Sheikh Russell Bhavan’ at the University Laboratory School and College facilities via videoconference. Sheikh Russell used to study at this school.
The prime minister was accompanied by Ganobhaban, Sheikh Russell Roller Skating Complex, Dhaka University Laboratory School, and Bangabandhu University Premises and International Conference Center.
Ganobhaban was present at the end of the Chief Secretary. Ahmed Kaikaus, Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office. Tofazzal Hossain Mia, press secretary to Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim and other senior officials.
The Minister of State for Information and Communication Technology, Junaid Ahmed Palak, the founding president of the Sheikh Russell National Council for Children and Adolescents, Rakibur Rahman, the Secretary General and Member of Parliament, Mahmud Us Samad Chowdhury, and the Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University, Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman, Awami League at the end of the university laboratory and college facilities at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center. It is worth mentioning that on August 15, 1975, at the age of 10, Sheikh Russell was murdered along with all the other members of his family.
