Announcing bringing the whole country to the rail network

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone for the country’s largest railway bridge, the Bangabandhu Railway Bridge.

He inaugurated the construction of the bridge through a virtual ceremony from Ganobhavan on Sunday morning. The bridge is being built over the Jamuna River with the aim of improving unprecedented communication with South-East Bengal. JICA of Japan is financing the 4.8 km long bridge. It will cost 16.81 million rupees.

At the opening ceremony of the bridge, the Prime Minister said that in addition to this bridge, the current government is strengthening rail connectivity. There are plans to install a railway from Dhaka to the port of Payra via Barisal-Patuakhali. The Cox’s Bazar rail link will be established with Dhaka. The whole country will be under the rail network.

Opening ceremonies were held in Sirajganj on the west bank of the Jamuna River and Tangail on the east bank to mark the opening of the bridge.

The Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh, among others, addressed the function chaired by the Minister of Railways, Nurul Islam Sujan. The function was moderated by Ahmed Kaikaus, Senior Secretary of the Cabinet Division.
