Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened this year’s Amar Ekushey Book Fair with the theme “The Centennial of the Birth of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Golden Jubilee of Independence” in mind. He kicked off the fair via video conference from Ganobhaban on Thursday (March 16).
Speaking as the main guest at the inauguration, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said: “March 11, 1948 was the birthplace of the movement for the dignity of the state language.” The Sangram Parishad was formed on March 11, 1948 as a result of Bangabandhu forming a student organization on January 4, 1948. Bangabandhu also kept in regular contact with students while in jail. An attempt was made to erase Bangabandhu’s contribution from history.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged everyone to go to the book fair following hygiene regulations as the incidence of corona has increased in the country.
This year’s book fair covers a vast area of 1.5 million square feet. 540 publishers participated. In the reality of the Corona period, hygiene has the highest priority at this year’s book fair. The use of a mask has been made mandatory for those who attend the fair. The 28-day fair will end on April 14. The fair will be open every day from 3pm to 9pm. It will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
154 out of 106 institutions in the academy premises and 60 units in 433 institutions in the Suhrawardy Udyan section; A total of 634 units have been assigned to 540 institutions. There are 33 pavilions at the fair. Little Magazine’s facilities have been installed in the main fairgrounds of the park. There, 135 LittleMags seats have been allocated, as well as 140 seats with five open positions.
Shishu Chattar is also in the Suhrawardy Udyan part of the fair. Arrangements have been made to sell and display the books of those who have published books at the initiative of a single, small, individual publisher at the National Library booth. Arrangements have been made for the presentation ceremony of the new book at Suhrawardy Udyan. The seminars will be held on the main stage of the book fair every day from March 19 to April 14 at 4 pm.
This time a new entrance and parking lot has been arranged at the eastern end of Suhrawardy Udyan adjacent to the Institute of Engineers. Also, there are three entrances and three exits at Suhrawardy in front of TSC and Bangla Academy. There are secure tents at each entrance, so that people can take shelter during rains and storms. On special days, special arrangements have been made for writers, journalists, editors, Bangla Academy Fellows, and state honored citizens.
The Prime Minister congratulated the authors and publishers for participating in this book fair during the Crown period.
The Minister of State for Culture, KM Khalid, presented the award to the winners of this year’s Bangla Sahitya Puraskar Academy-2020 at the request of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her virtual presence at the event.
In addition, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina released the cover of the book ‘NEW CHINA 1952’ translated into English by Bangabandhu.
The Minister of State for Culture, KM Khalid, addressed the opening function as a special guest. The Secretary of Culture gave a speech. Badrul Arefin. Habibullah Siraj, Managing Director of Bangla Academy, delivered the welcoming speech. The program was chaired by the president of the Academy, Professor Shamsuzzaman Khan.
