Dhaka: The price of the spice has risen from 10 to 20 rupees per kg overnight in the Dhaka retail market following India’s announcement to halt onion exports. Shoppers have been seen coming back empty-handed to buy onions in many stores.
On Monday evening (September 14), several retail markets were visited in Mirpur, the capital’s Jowar Sahara.
Sellers said that since the night, many buyers have suddenly flocked to stores to buy onions. However, buyers had to return empty-handed without finding onions in some stores.
It can be seen that some shops in Jowar Sahara sell Indian onions for between Rs 70-85. And local onions sell for Rs 60-70.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Shahid, owner of the Taj General Store in Shewrapara, Mirpur, told banglanews that although there were no buyers of onions since the afternoon, the sale of onions has increased since the evening. Onions are sold here for Rs 65-70. The price is a little higher than in the morning.
He added that a sack of onion was sold after dark. I heard that the wholesale market price has gone up overnight. So I have to buy onions at tomorrow’s price.
Abdul Khaleq, another seller of onions and potatoes in Mirpur, said: “We have also increased the price in the wholesale market.” I heard that India has stopped exporting onions. That is why the price of onion is rising. Tomorrow it will increase from 10 to 20 rupees per kg.
Meanwhile, housewife Nahida Akhter, who came to buy onions at a shop in Mirpur Kazipara, told banglanews that India stopped exporting onions and that is why I came to buy onions at night. I bought 5 kg of onion at 60 rupees. The onions were sold for Rs 80 in the morning. With the announcement from India, retailers have increased the price from Rs 10-15 per kg. Maybe tomorrow the price will go up, so I bought the onion at a slightly higher price.
Retailers, on the other hand, say they have to sell at higher prices in the wholesale market. If the price drops in the wholesale market, they will also reduce the price of onion. However, there is no possibility of price reduction at the moment.
