Chinese ginger was sold at Tk 115 per kg at the Khatunganj wholesale market in Chittagong on Saturday. Sold to Tk 150 a day ago. A week ago, the maximum price for ginger in this market was from Tk 250 to Tk 280.
There are two known reasons behind the drop in ginger prices. First, the ginger trapped in the port has been unloaded and marketed. Again, the demand for ginger has decreased. Furthermore, the market was also monitored by management.
Ginger prices have been declining in the wholesale and retail market. In retail, ginger increased to Rs 280-300 per kg. This ginger sells for Rs 160-180 per kg. In today’s wholesale market, it will drop below Tk 140 in retail, traders said.
Mohammad Idris Prothom Alo, secretary general of Khatunganj Hamidullah Mia Market Arhatdar Samiti, said that the supply of ginger in the market was low before Ramadan. Demand was high. This greatly increases the price of ginger. Now the offer has increased. No demand. As a result, prices have dropped abnormally.
According to Chittagong Customs, 12,072 tons of ginger were imported through the Chittagong port from January to March 11 of this year. At the same time, last year, 31,402 tons were imported. In other words, import is down about 59 percent right now. In addition to reducing imports, ginger shipments were stuck at the port. This created a supply crisis in the market. Taking advantage of this situation, merchants increased the price of ginger.
After increasing the price of ginger, the administration launched a campaign on the market. Traders also unloaded 4 lakh 75 thousand kg of ginger trapped in the Chittagong port. New ginger shipments are also downloaded as congestion decreases. On the other hand, seven and a half lakh kg of ginger were unloaded from Myanmar through the Teknaf land port last month. Interested people think that this has had a positive effect on the market.
Nur Hossain, head of Farhad Trading in Khatunganj, Chittagong, a major ginger importer, told Prothom Alo: “Three days ago, I sold 61,000 kg of ginger at Tk 135 per kg. At that time, over 200 rupees were sold per kg of ginger on the market. When he got it from the port, he launched it at a lower price than the market price. ‘
Traders said shoppers were also in a hurry to buy ginger as prices increased. Now there are fewer buyers to buy ginger. Merchants said that buyers bought ginger based on their own needs. A family does not need more than one kg of ginger per month. As the demand for ginger decreases, so does the price.
