The announced results show that the Awami League mayoral candidate Sanat Kumar Biswas was unofficially elected with 6,072 votes. His closest rival Achintya Kumar Mandal, an independent candidate from Jag Pratik, got 2,515 votes. The BNP candidate passed away recently. Abul Khair Khan obtained 703 votes. Another independent candidate, Gautam Kumar Roy, obtained 8 votes with the symbol of the coconut tree.
The BNP announced a boycott of the polls on Monday, citing irregularities in the election. Abdul Mannan, organizing secretary of the Dakop Upazila BNP, made the announcement at a press conference at the office. An hour and a half later, news came of the BNP candidate’s death.
Meanwhile, Abul Khair Khan’s burial was completed in the family cemetery after three janazas. The first janaza was held at 10 am Tuesday on the grounds of the Chalna Adarsh Government Primary School and the second janaza was held on the grounds of the Jame Mosque of Upazila headquarters. From there he was buried in the family cemetery after the third janaza in Anandnagar, his hometown. Leaders, activists and popular representatives of different political parties at the district and upazila levels were present at the janaza.
