Dhaka: The cabinet has approved the draft of the ‘National Online Media Policy, 2018’ (revised, 2020) that makes registration mandatory for IPTV, as well as for online editions of newspapers, radio and television.
The approval came in a virtual cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (August 31).
After the meeting, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said there was an online policy in 2016. The Cabinet Secretary said that (Policy 2017) did not specify the eligibility of the online news portal registration, the registration fee, the determination of authority, the conduct of operations as a licensed television channel and news portal. radio, IP TV and Internet radio transmission. These have been included in a draft, the draft has been discussed in cabinet, and the draft has been approved.
The previous 9 paragraphs have been modified and 5 new paragraphs have been inserted, said the cabinet secretary.
The cabinet secretary said that television and radio function as news portals. He didn’t have to ask permission. I have to take it now. There were no specific instructions on IP TV, internet radio streaming, that’s why they were inserted.

When asked if registration is required, the cabinet secretary said, “Yes, registration is required.”
Until there is a Broadcasting Commission, the governing body will be the authority determined by the Ministry of Information.
The government has taken the initiative to register the country’s online news portals, in the first phase 34 online portals were allowed to register on July 30. However, they have not yet registered. Registration will begin after the finance ministry sets the rate, information ministry officials said.
