Dhaka: The Minister of Commerce, Tipu Munshi, has inaugurated the ‘Onion of comfort at home’ program organized by the Ministry of Commerce and Electronic Commerce.
The program launched on Sunday (September 20) at the Bangladesh Online Commerce Corporation (TCB).

It was reported that consumers will be able to buy onions at 36 Tk. Initially, 3 kg of onion will be sold to a buyer at a price of 36 Tk through five e-commerce companies in the country. In addition, the shipping price for each order has been set at a maximum of Rs 30.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, the government has taken up this program to prevent the rise in the price of onions and to get onions from middle-class buyers through e-commerce. In the initial stage, only Dhaka and Chittagong are starting to sell this onion. Later, the number of establishments and the quantity of onions will be increased. TCB will gradually sell onions in all parts of the country under e-commerce.
According to e-Cab, currently five online companies will be able to sell onions online in Dhaka and Chittagong. Initially selected TCBs will land dealerships online: Chaldal, Swapna Online, Sindabad.com, Sabzibazar.com and Bdisol.com.
Starting Monday, Verification.com, OneShop, and another organization can join the series. TCB’s onions will also be sold from a common platform for women entrepreneurs called Windy.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of Commerce said that the Ministry of Commerce has taken the initiative to sell onions on the open market at great prices through TCB. For those who cannot afford to buy from Traxell, TCB, in collaboration with e-commerce, has arranged to deliver affordable onions at home.
The Trade Minister said that, like other products, buyers can now buy affordable onions at home. The idea of selling onions through e-commerce is new, in which case there may be some problems. We will not stop, solve the problem and move on.
Stating that there is no reason to worry about onions, the Trade Minister said that there are sufficient stocks of domestic and imported onions in the country. India has already allowed the export of 25,000 metric tons of onions, which have started to enter Bangladesh. India is expected to allow the export of another 10,000 metric tons of onions. Onion imports from Myanmar and Turkey have started. Onions are also imported from many countries. There will be no onion crisis in the country. If we buy only the necessary onions without worrying, there will be no problem.
Speaking as a special guest, TCB President Brigadier General Ariful Hasan said that TCB generally provides daily necessities to low-income people via trucks. But by selling onions in online stores, this opportunity has been created for buyers who cannot buy the product online. This government service will connect more people through online expansion.
In the function it was reported that for the moment, each institution will receive onions daily and will collect onions from TCB every three days. Online companies have set an initial goal to sell 10,000 tons of onions. The amount can increase even more. TCB dealership is offered considering warehouses, delivery capacity, e-commerce website and e-booth recommendations of companies. Additionally, the Ministry of Commerce, TCB, and e-CAB have formulated a uniform set of rules or SOPs to ensure that the entire process is completed correctly. That every institution will be obliged to comply. These onions cannot be sold by any means other than online.
