Onion prices are on the rise again. Despite the offer in the market, this essential product is becoming uncontrollable.

Domestic onions are sold at a maximum of Tk 80 per kg in the capital’s retail market on Monday. In addition, at the wholesale level, domestic onions are sold at Taka 48-50 per kg. Furthermore, the price of imported onion has also risen. Indian onions, which were sold at Rs 30 per kg last week, are now selling at Rs 45 per kg.

However, traders say that the price of the product has risen as Indian traders have reduced onion exports under the pretext of the rains.

On September 29 last year, India suddenly stopped exporting onions, causing instability in the country’s market. At that time, onions were selling for Rs 300-300 per kg on the retail market in the capital. The country’s onion market has started to grow again around the same time this year.

Halim Khan, an onion seller in Karwan Bazar, said: “The price of onion is going up due to the floods. However, many traders are stocking onions much more than they need based on last year’s experience, so the price of onions is increasing.

Nayana Akhter, a buyer in Jatrabari, said the onion price was also low last week. But onion prices have risen again this week. He said: ‘I have come to buy more onions this year because of the price of onions last year. But when I arrive, I see that everything is ready. ‘

Naina added: “If the government does not launch an operation now, the price of this onion will again get out of the hands of ordinary people.”

Meanwhile, the Commerce Ministry today warned of strict legal action against onion hoarders, saying the country has sufficient stocks of onions. Imports are normal. There is no compelling reason for the onion crisis or the price increase. The government will take strict measures in accordance with the law if an attempt is made to increase the price of onion through the creation of illegal stocks or an artificial crisis.
